All Blacks celebrate dramatic win
When they were not being rested for a World Cup semi-final, Italy's attempt to reduce the All Blacks' points tally for this test ended in disappointment when the All Blacks ran in two tries in the closing minutes to win 22-18.
It was an emphatic and decisive victory for the All Blacks after the world champions had only managed a single penalty after 10 minutes of play.
They led 12-0 after a deceptive first quarter which saw them run in four tries. The All Blacks' first try came after only 12 seconds when the big Peter O'Neill slipped a pass across the tryline which was converted by Keven Mealamu. After that, the All Blacks scored six tries, including four through wingers Cory Jane and Julian Savea.
In the space of six minutes, the All Blacks opened up a 22-0 lead on 14-3. They broke through the Italian defence for their second try when Anthony Boric, one of two players with an Italian heritage in the team, dived over in the corner. After that, Savea's 65th minute try - his 28th in all competitions this year - settled the contest.
After converting Jane's try, Anton Lienert-Brown broke clear to score.
As they arrived in Rome on Friday morning, and as they watched on TV, many in the All Blacks' camp expressed the hope that they were starting to turn the corner after a difficult and draining week.
"We didn't play our best, but we've still done well. The players are happy and we're back to where we want to be," said the captain Kieran Read.
"I know it doesn't matter who you're playing against or where you are, that's going to be a game you're going to have a lot of pride in.
"I think we came out a little bit flat and didn't get going in the first half. But we got a lot of momentum in the second half, which is what we've been missing. I think we showed a lot of character. We showed we were going to play this game right through to the end."
